About the MPA Foundation
The Michigan Press Association Foundation was created to advance community journalism by fostering learning, sponsoring research, and promoting public awareness of the importance of a free press in Michigan. Since 1980, the Foundation has contributed to the quality, vigor, and fairness of journalism in the state through scholarships, grants, stipends, and other programs. With the support of our donors, we provide these services in an effort to maintain strong journalism and newspapers in Michigan.

The Foundation supports and maintains several programs, scholarships and events each year:
The Richard and Donna Milliman Community Journalism Scholarships are annually distributed to Michigan journalism students. The Scholarship is traditionally given to students from the original 5 participating universities.
The Foundation’s summer Match Intern Program pairs graduating high school seniors and community college students with MPA member organizations. At the end of the paid internship, students receive a scholarship co-funded by the Foundation and the hiring newspaper.
Another Foundation/MPA partnership includes the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA). Teachers and news advisers spend four or six weeks at state news organizations, writing, editing, shooting pictures and producing web content. This “summer school boot camp” brings value to newsrooms and enables teachers to return to the classrooms with insight into the evolving news profession. The Foundation also awards tuition scholarships to middle and high school students to attend MIPA’s week-long summer workshop at MSU.
The Foundation’s largest fundraising events include an annual golf benefit and auction. The 2018 Scholarship Golf Benefit and auction will be held in conjunction with the MPA Annual Convention in Lansing on May 9. Legacy bequests, memorial gifts and honorariums also help fund Foundation initiatives. Generous support comes from MPA and MNI members, associate members, vendors and friends of Michigan journalism. Your help creates life-changing opportunities for those who will sustain Michigan’s news profession.
